Why it matters
Under the Equality Act 2010, UK service providers must make reasonable adjustments so disabled people can use their services, and that includes websites and apps. Public sector bodies also have specific accessibility regulations.
The standard to aim for
The widely used benchmark is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) at level AA.
Quick wins
- Enough colour contrast for text and buttons
- Keyboard access to every menu, form and button
- Clear headings and descriptive link text
- Text alternatives for meaningful images
- Visible focus outlines and properly labelled forms
- Captions or transcripts for video and audio
Test with real people
Automated tools find only part of the problems. Combine them with keyboard checks, screen-reader tests and feedback from users.
Accessibility helps everyone: faster, clearer sites convert better and are easier to maintain.
