What UK customers expect
Debit and credit cards remain the default, and Apple Pay and Google Pay are increasingly expected at checkout. Offering a few familiar options removes friction and lifts completed orders.
- Cards and wallets: fast, familiar and supported by most payment providers
- Pay by bank (Open Banking): bank-to-bank payments, often with lower fees on larger orders
- Direct debit: best for subscriptions, memberships and repeat invoices
- Bank transfer: common in B2B and near-instant with Faster Payments
- Buy now, pay later: optional, mainly for higher-value retail
Choosing a provider
Compare fees (typically a percentage plus a fixed amount per card payment), payout times, dispute handling and how well the provider connects to your accounting software.
Make VAT and receipts clear
Show prices with or without VAT consistently, send receipts, and make sure your accounting tool receives each payment with its VAT treatment.
Start with cards and wallets, then add pay by bank or direct debit where it saves you fees or chasing.
