Mobile app or web app? How to decide

A simple way to choose between a native app, a cross-platform app and a web app, before you spend money.

Start with the job to be done

Decide what your customers or team actually need to do, how often and on which devices. The right choice follows from that, not from what is fashionable.

Three options

  • Web app: runs in the browser, needs no app-store approval and is the fastest route to launch
  • Cross-platform app: one codebase for iOS and Android with access to device features
  • Native app: separate iOS and Android apps for the best performance and platform feel

When an app is worth it

Choose an app when you need push notifications, offline use, camera or location features, or daily-use convenience. Otherwise a fast, well-built web app is often enough.

Budget and timing

UK market surveys in 2026 put simple app MVPs from around £10,000 and production apps from about £25,000 with agencies, so a staged plan helps.

A good first step is a clickable prototype and a small first release before you commit the full budget.
