UAE website accessibility: a practical guide

How to make a bilingual Arabic and English site usable for everyone, and the standard to aim for.

Why it matters

An accessible site reaches more customers, including people of determination, older users and anyone on a small screen or in bright light. It also tends to rank and convert better.

The standard to aim for

WCAG 2.2 level AA is the usual benchmark, and UAE government digital guidance points towards it.

  • Enough colour contrast for text
  • Every image has a useful text description
  • Everything works with a keyboard
  • Forms have clear labels and error messages
  • Video has captions

Arabic and English together

Mark the language of each page and of each switch of language, keep the layout consistent when the language changes, choose an Arabic font that stays readable at small sizes, and test the Arabic version with a screen reader, not just the English one.

Test it

Run an automated check, then go through the key journeys, such as contact and checkout, using only a keyboard.
