Custom or off-the-shelf software? How to choose

When ready-made tools are enough, when custom software pays off, and how Swedish SMEs can decide.

The honest starting point

Off-the-shelf software is the right answer more often than people admit. If a standard tool covers about 80% of what you do, use it and keep your budget for what makes you different.

When custom software pays off

  • Your process is a competitive advantage that standard tools cannot copy
  • You pay for many licences or workarounds that still do not fit
  • You need to connect several systems that do not talk to each other
  • Data ownership, security or regulation demands full control

Weigh the full cost

Compare licences over three to five years, the time lost to workarounds and the cost of switching later. Custom software has a higher upfront cost but no per-user fees and can be shaped as you grow.

A middle path

Many Swedish SMEs combine a standard core, such as accounting or CRM, with a small custom layer for integrations and portals.

How we help

Globalsoft starts with a short discovery call and an honest recommendation, even when the answer is not custom software.
