Mobile app or web app? How to decide

A simple way for Swedish businesses to choose between a native app, a cross-platform app and a web app.

Start with the job

Ask what people must do and how often. A tool used daily, offline or with the camera and notifications may justify an app. A booking page or portal used occasionally is usually better as a web app.

  • Web app: one codebase, no store approval, instant updates, works on every device
  • Cross-platform app (Flutter, React Native): one team, iOS and Android, good performance
  • Native app: best access to device features, highest cost
  • Progressive web app: installable and offline-capable without the stores

Cost and time

A web app is usually the fastest and cheapest way to validate an idea. Cross-platform apps cost less than two native apps. Native pays off when the product depends on device-specific features.

Swedish context

BankID sign-in, Swish payments and GDPR-ready data handling can be built into any of these routes; plan them early because they affect the design.
