Online payments in the USA: cards, wallets, ACH

What US customers expect at checkout, how sales tax works for online sellers, and how to keep card data safe.

What US customers expect

Cards remain the default for US online checkout, and wallets such as Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal are common. For invoices and subscriptions, ACH bank transfers are cheaper than cards, and buy-now-pay-later options such as Affirm, Klarna or Afterpay can lift conversion on higher-priced items.

  • Cards: Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover
  • Wallets: Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal
  • ACH debit for invoices and subscriptions
  • Buy-now-pay-later for larger baskets

Sales tax

Since the 2018 Wayfair decision, online sellers can owe sales tax in states where they have no physical presence once they pass that state’s economic-nexus threshold. Tools such as Stripe Tax or Avalara can calculate and file it, and your shop should show tax clearly at checkout.

Security and fees

Use a payment provider so card data never touches your own server, which makes PCI DSS compliance far simpler. Fees are often around 2.9% plus 30 cents per card payment and vary by provider.

We connect your site to the provider you choose and test the whole flow, refunds and receipts included.
