Three rough tiers
A simple app with a handful of screens, such as a booking or catalog app, often costs CA$15,000 to CA$40,000. A mid-size app with accounts, payments and an admin panel typically runs CA$40,000 to CA$120,000, and a complex product with real-time features, maps or integrations can exceed CA$150,000.
Ways to keep cost under control
- Launch one clear function first and add features after real use
- Build iOS and Android together with a cross-platform framework when it fits
- Reuse an existing website back-end instead of starting from zero
- Agree a fixed scope for the first release and price changes separately
Running costs
Budget for the Apple Developer fee (about US$99 a year) and the one-time Google Play fee (US$25), plus hosting, push notifications, updates for new phone versions and support. A common rule is 15% to 20% of the build cost per year for upkeep.
Remember that many Canadian users have patchy connections outside the big cities, so good apps cache data and fail gracefully offline.
