Pourquoi est-ce important ?
About one in five Canadians speaks French as a first language, and in Quebec French is the language of commerce. Bill 96 strengthened the French-language rules for businesses serving Quebec customers, and New Brunswick is officially bilingual. A site that treats French as an afterthought loses trust, and often sales.
Structure that search engines understand
- Separate URLs for each language, such as /en and /fr
- hreflang tags with en-CA and fr-CA so the right version is shown
- A language switcher that keeps the visitor on the same page
- Translated titles, descriptions, image text and link text, not only body copy
Use a translator who knows Canadian French. Words and tone differ from France, from payment terms to everyday phrases, and customers notice.
What to avoid
Do not redirect people by IP address alone and do not hide one language behind a pop-up. Let visitors choose, remember the choice, and make both versions equally complete and equally fast.
