Canada payments: Interac, Stripe, Square

Which payment methods Canadian customers expect online and in the shop, and how to choose a processor without surprises.

What customers expect

Canadians pay by Visa and Mastercard, Interac Debit, Apple Pay and Google Pay, and they often send Interac e-Transfer for services and invoices. Offering the methods people already trust is one of the simplest ways to lift conversion.

Choosing a processor

  • Stripe: strong developer tools, subscriptions and wallets, billed in CAD
  • Moneris: a Canadian processor common with retailers and in-person terminals
  • Square: easy card-reader set-up for shops, cafés and pop-ups
  • PayPal: familiar to buyers, higher fees on small sales

Compare the per-transaction rate, the monthly fees, how quickly funds reach your bank account and how chargebacks are handled. A cheaper rate that holds funds for a week can cost more than it saves.

Details that matter

Show prices in CAD, show tax as its own line and send receipts that your bookkeeper can match to payouts. For recurring billing, plan for failed cards and clear cancelation steps so customers stay in control.
