What drives the price
A website’s price depends far less on the number of pages than on what the site has to do: how much custom design it needs, whether it takes payments, how many systems it connects to and who builds it.
- Build route: a template builder, a freelancer, a small studio or a larger agency
- Design: a customised template or a fully bespoke design
- Features: bookings, payments, accounts, search or integrations
- Content: who writes, photographs and translates it
- Running costs: hosting, domain, security updates and support
Typical Australian price bands
Australian market surveys in 2026 put a small business website built by a freelancer at roughly A$2,000–A$5,900 and a studio- or agency-built site at A$4,900–A$19,500 or more. Online shops often start around A$5,900 for a template store and run to A$29,300 or more for a professionally built one; fully custom platforms cost considerably more.
Look beyond the build price
Hosting, a domain, security updates, backups and small changes continue after launch. A realistic annual budget for a small business site is a few hundred to a couple of thousand Australian dollars, depending on how much support you want.
A very cheap quote that leaves out content, security or support usually costs more later. Ask every supplier for a written scope and a 12-month total cost.
How to compare quotes
Ask what is included, who owns the source code, what happens after launch and how changes are charged. Quotes in Australian dollars that state clearly what is and is not included are far easier to compare.
